Christian gap years programme: FirstServe

Inside FirstServe – a gap year programme supported by Counties for 18–30s.

“FirstServe has taught me that the call of missions is to love Jesus in such a way that you don’t need a specific event or place to witness.” That’s how one former FirstServer summed up their year on the programme – and it captures exactly the invitation at its heart.

What would it look like to give a year to God? Not in theory, not just turning up on Sundays with good intentions, but genuinely stepping out and seeing what He does with it? Established in 2010, FirstServe is a Christian gap-year programme for 18–30-year-olds built around real, hands-on mission experience. The vision hasn’t changed since day one: to spark a passion for serving Jesus, at home or across the world.

No two journeys look the same

Participants are placed alongside churches, mission workers and ministries, taking part in day-to-day work – youth ministry, evangelism, community outreach, discipleship, cross-cultural mission – through either an overseas pathway or a UK pathway closer to home. “Many people assume mission only happens overseas,” the team notes, “but the UK pathway helps participants see the opportunities right on their doorstep.” Both routes include mentoring, pastoral support and practical training throughout the year, so nobody is sent out and left to work it out alone.

What former participants say

Rachel, a former FirstServer, calls it “an incredible journey” and “a life-changing experience” – the friendships formed, the teaching received, and the chance to grow alongside others pursuing the same calling. For Sophie, it was the mentoring and pastoral support that mattered most through a particularly challenging season, support she describes simply as “invaluable.”

Shaped for the long haul

FirstServe is a stepping stone as much as a year in itself, preparing participants for whatever comes next – further ministry, church leadership, overseas mission, or simply a deeper, more purposeful life of following Jesus. The year is backed by partners including Echoes International, One2Lead and GLO/Tilsley College, who bring training in theology, discipleship, leadership and mission alongside decades of experience investing in the next generation.

Is FirstServe for you?

There is no typical FirstServer. Some arrive with a clear sense of calling; others are simply looking for direction. What they share is a desire to grow: to be teachable, to step outside their comfort zone, and to stay open to whatever God does with the year. “You don’t need to have everything figured out,” the team says. “FirstServe exists for people who are still asking those questions.”
