The views from the top were amazing. Because everyone from the camp went, it was another opportunity to chat with the kids and, where possible, learn more about them. Throughout the week the temperature never went below 30°, which is typical for that time of year in Hungary, but it’s not typical for us Brits! We were beginning to struggle, particularly when it hit 38°! At the same time, we just kept going, because while we wouldn’t do a 10k hike in 33° heat in the UK, we did it without batting an eyelid in Hungary, because everyone else did. On the Thursday evening, we also had an International Night. This was an opportunity to hear from different countries around the world. Hady, from the English team is from Lesotho, so she spoke on the history of Christianity there. Dan, who is from Northern Ireland, taught some of the English and Hungarian team an Irish dance, which they then performed. On the Friday, the final day, we invited the parents to join us in the afternoon and we had a concert where we sang some of the songs we’d been doing during the week and we performed the dramas that each team had been practicing. These dramas were based on the parable from day 1, which was the wise and foolish builders. We have now been in the UK for 30 years and became British citizens in November 2012. I have been the volunteer lead chaplain with Lancashire’s Constabulary since 2007. Through their charity Cornergate Foundation, they have delivered rehabilitation services at the local prison (Kim also volunteers in the Chaplaincy) and offer mentoring programmes in the community. Cornergate Foundation also seeks partnerships with police and probation, supporting people in crisis, perhaps having committed a crime or trying to avoid further crime. Kim and Jo have a wealth of experience and knowledge, having begun their work in 2013. They are available to support and train churches to offer the same care and practical support to the least, the last and the lost. He mentors and encourages young Christians, through Bible Studies and Home Groups. She is one of the leaders on the Counties One2Lead youth programme and she serves on the team at the Royal Welsh Show through the ministry of ‘Show Jesus’. Lesley travels extensively throughout Wales with her prayer partner, Mary, praying that the Lord will bless and transform communities and for people to come into relationship with Him. Lesley is a Welsh learner and enjoys the opportunity to speak to people in their heart language. He works alongside long term unemployed and those with broken backgrounds to help them restructure their lives. Clive is best known for walking long distances with a 12ft x 6ft 50-pound cross long distance. Clive is married to Fiona and they have three grown up daughters. Although children’s work has played a large part in the activities of Castleton Chapel, they have found over recent years that the ageing fellowship has meant that they spend more time in pastoral work. He has first-hand experience of how the project works. “We have been focusing on arresting the decline, stabilising the church, looking for some key giftings and regrowing a central core of committed workers. “HIC has always been about building relationships and seeing people come to faith in Christ” Mark explains. “For us, it is not so much about starting new things, as building a team for the future, futureproofing our church against what was a dwindling and ageing congregation.
